Running head: REDUCING STRESS AT WORK Reducing Stress at Work
10/21/2016 1 REDUCING STRESS AT WORK 2 At a workplace, people experience different types of stress and they also have different
ways to reduce stress. Some employers provide a good working environment as a way of
reducing employees stress experiences at the workplaces. Although most of the employers try to
do so, stress still affects the employees. Stress at work can result affects an individual
productivity and performance. There is every reason why it is important for one to reduce stress.
Reducing stress at work is meaningful to be because it causes illness such as cancer and heart
attack, it may lead to the development of psychological issues such as anxiety disorders, and it
may result in extreme fluctuations in body weight. Stress is part of life because at one point an individual become stressed ?if it is not well
managed it can result to illness such as cancer and heart attack. Stress can lead to alteration of
the hormones in the body affecting the body?s immune system. These changes in hormones can
result in cancers such as breast cancer. Again, stress can increase the levels of blood pressure and
cholesterol in the body. This exposes one to unhealthy practices which lead to high levels of
stress hormone like adrenaline. It can also affect blood clotting and this can result in heart
disease (Dhabhar, 2014). Stress can also lead to the development of psychological issues such as anxiety disorders.
Anxiety can be a feeling of fear and panic and may be a reaction to stress. A traumatic event can
result in a lot of mental demand thus resulting in anxiety. At this level, the body will mentally
and physically reacts to the anxiety. This is because a traumatic event makes one very stressed
and one can have panic or phobia when he/she remembers what happens. There are different REDUCING STRESS AT WORK 3 types of disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobias, social anxiety disorder,
and panic disorder. Extreme levels of stress and anxiety can result in diseases such as heart attack
and mental illness. (Spielberger & Sarason, 2013) High levels of stress can lead to extreme fluctuations in body weight. Stress can lead to
body loss or body gain. Stress leads to changes in body hormones which in turn affects one?s
eating habits. The altered levels of cortisol hormone result to a high demand of energy used by
the body to fight stress thus stimulating hunger. Even after the stress, the hormone continues to
react increasing one?s food intake due to increased appetite. As the fats are not broken, this leads
to the accumulation of fats in the body thus increase in body weight. Stress also leads to body
loss. This is because it causes anxiety which results in loss of appetite and one feels full before
taking food and this leads to a reduction in one?s food intake (Driskell & Salas, 2013). Stress affects people in different ways and if one is affected by stress like workplace
stress, he/she should for ways to minimize the effects caused by stress. This is why I find it
meaningful to reduce stress at work because to leads to; illness such as cancer and heart attack, it
may lead to the development of psychological issues such as anxiety disorders, and it may result
in extreme fluctuations in body weight.as stress is normal in life and may not be avoided in some
situations, the way one responds to stress affects how the stress can affect the body. References REDUCING STRESS AT WORK 4 Dhabhar, F. S. (2014). Effects of stress on immune function: the good, the bad, and the beautiful.
