Running head: ONLINE SCHOOLS VS. TRADITIONAL SCHOOLS 1 Online Schools vs. Traditional Schools: The Choice is Yours Which One Will You Make

Columbia Southern University ONLINE SCHOOLS VS. TRADITIONAL SCHOOLS 2 Online Schools vs. Traditional Schools: The Choice is Yours Which One Will You Make

Pursuing a college degree is a feat in itself deciding where you would like to

pursue that degree is even a more challenging experiences. Online colleges provide for a variety

of flexibility for the student and for them to develop ways to become more disciplined.

Traditional colleges provide face to face interaction within the campus and surrounding areas of

the school. As one may choose one particular place to learn over the other the main debate that

arises would be that the curriculum of an online college does not equal to one of a traditional

college. Transferring of colleges by students proves the point of this debate. Although traditional

for-profit institutions have faced the transfer-of-credit issue in the past, online institutions have to

cover the same ground while trying to persuade state colleges and universities that their course

work is legitimate.? (Carnevale, 2002). The transfer of credit issues within the online college

debacle leads us to how professors do not believe in the online school system. There are college

professors that believe the entire online school community is a joke and that degrees from this

type of institution should not be accepted. In hindsight, there are traditional colleges out there

that have begun to incorporate online courses within their degree programs. Due to different

requirements and the nature of what is being taught in a particular course, some courses may

never be able to incorporate anything into an online course. The end result of all college

experiences no matter what avenue is taken is being able to obtain employment. Online colleges

have advanced over the years and these schools now have programs that assist students in putting

them on the right path to obtain employment. Some employers are resistant to the online degree;

?There are people who are very resistant and very traditional in the way they perceive an online

degree,? she says. ?For some, it?s just deeply embedded in how they think.? (Haynie, 2014). ONLINE SCHOOLS VS. TRADITIONAL SCHOOLS 3 While some students choose to attend an online school, they should not be penalized just because

of their choices, online colleges allow for individuals to multitask, traditional colleges allow for

more interaction and immersion but both avenues allow for continued education and the

opportunity to better yourself.

The Literature Review

In order to better understand the ongoing debate of which learning avenue is better than

the other online college vs. traditional colleges. One would have to know the background story

of how the competitor arose, which would be the online schools. This review will allow for the

multiple pros and cons of this debate to be explained. We will start off with the history of the

online college, then move over into the phase where they became a competitor to the traditional

college which this is where the pros and cons came about in reference to which school is better

than the other.

When Online Colleges First Came into the Picture

Of course, we know that online colleges did not just pop out of the air and exist.

Everything has a beginning and the beginning of online schooling started in Great Britain but it

was not online of course because internet had not been established yet. ?The concept is over 170

years old and has its origins in a correspondence course offered in Great Britain where the

instructor sent lessons and received students? completed assignments by mail. Distance learning

was born, and today?s online courses are modern versions of their humble predecessors? (Hickey,

2014). Time evolved slowly but surely and in 1994 the first actual online school was created. It

was called the Computer Assisted Learning Campus or for short CALC. ?CALCampus was the

first to develop and implement the concept of a totally online-based school through which

administration, real-time classroom instruction, and materials were provided, originating with the ONLINE SCHOOLS VS. TRADITIONAL SCHOOLS 4 QuantumLink campus? (Morabito, 2015). The next step that online colleges would have to

succeed through would be getting accreditation. With an accreditation, they would be able to

actually compete again the traditional college. This time would come in 1999; Jones

International University was offered accreditation by North Central Accreditation.

Traditional Colleges Argue Curriculum

It is to be expected that traditional colleges would not be too interested in the online

college way of life due to now being a competitor. There are individuals out there that feel as if a

student is not being immersed in the same social scene as traditional colleges. Then you have

individuals that are somewhat okay with the online colleges but they feel as if the information

they are being taught is substandard to the information that is taught at a school like theirs. There

is research that shows that online students did not fare as well as traditional college students in

certain courses. ?A pilot scheme at San Jose State University in California, offering a math?s and

statistics course run by Udacity, was suspended last year. Whereas 30% of campus students

passed an entry-level algebra course, 18% of those studying online did?and the gap widened as

material became more complex? (The Digital Degree, 2014). This data alone does not give the

online college programs a leg to stand on. Students may also run into issues when it comes to the

accreditation of a school. For example, said student goes to school earns a degree and come to

find out they cannot transfer the credits anywhere because the school is not regionally accredited.

Integration of Traditional Colleges and Online Colleges

Technology has allowed for online colleges to move ahead at a faster rate than those

going to traditional schools. For some instances this is due to funding but otherwise online

institutions have been able to elaborate more in respects to how the information is portrayed due

to the medium that it is put out in, in the first place. ?At the same time, a technological revolution ONLINE SCHOOLS VS. TRADITIONAL SCHOOLS 5 is challenging higher education?s business model. An explosion in online learning, much of it

free, means that the knowledge once imparted to a lucky few has been released to anyone with a

smartphone or laptop? (The Digital Degree, 2014). There are institutions that notice the audience

of students that would like to go to school online and traditionally. So, traditional colleges have

now started programs within their different schools that allow a student to take both classes in

the classroom and online. The vice president for education attainment and innovation at the

American Council on Education; ?The best online courses have a high degree of interaction.?

Interaction is what Oregon State chemistry professor Michael Lerner had in mind when he

started incorporating ?collaborative web-based laboratories? into an online chemistry course at

the university? (Abdul-Alim, 2013). In the end the employers are the ones who need to see that

no matter what avenue is chosen these students have furthered their education and they have

completed the coursework for their programs no matter if online or in a physical classroom. Not

every decides to take a leap and risk and attempt to obtain a degree which should show the

employers out there that the particular person already has the drive out there to succeed in life

and not just sit back and wait for something to come to them. While some students choose to

attend an online school, they should not be penalized just because of their choices, online

colleges allow for individuals to multitask, traditional colleges allow for more interaction and

immersion but both avenues allow for continued education and the opportunity to better yourself.

No matter what type of school an individual is attending they should be applauded and not

criticized. References ONLINE SCHOOLS VS. TRADITIONAL SCHOOLS 6 Abdul-Alim, J. (2013, March 27). Institutions are Increasingly Incorporating Online
