Introduction There is a growing number of soldiers with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
With more and more soldiers being sent into combat those numbers are going to continue to rise.
Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (the use of simulated interactive and immersive environments
as a tool therapy) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (an evidence based manualized therapy used
by clinicians to help people recover from PTSD.) treatment protocol are two forms of therapy
that continue to show great improvement when helping soldiers in their therapy.
Our firm is hypothesizing the effectiveness of virtual reality exposure therapy and
cognitive processing therapy on 60 Soldiers that present with Posttraumatic stress disorder. The
60 Soldiers will be split into two groups; group A (those treated with Virtual Reality Exposure
Therapy) and group B (Cognitive Processing Therapy). Our firm is hypothesizing that those that
are participating in the Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy will have a decrease in their symptoms.
Our firm has come to this conclusion INFERENTIAL RESEARCH AND STATISTICS PROJECT
3 Methodology
The two groups consist of 60 soldiers, 30 in group A and 30 in group B. Each group will be split
in no specific order. In each of these groups both male and females will be represented, ranging
from ages 20-43. These soldiers have served a minimum of one tour overseas. Each of the
soldiers have been diagnosed with PTSD and their symptoms include night terrors as well as
flashbacks. Each group will have a minimum of three sessions per week for six weeks. During
these sessions the solider will meet with a clinician and do therapy for 45 minutes.
Before the study these men and women were asked to rate their night terrors and flashbacks
using a scale 1-10; 1 representing that the symptoms are not that severe and do not interfere with
daily activity and 10 representing that the symptoms are very serve and intense and affect daily
activity. The participants were then asked to rate their symptoms on the scale 1-10 after they
completed their therapy. INFERENTIAL RESEARCH AND STATISTICS PROJECT
4 Conclusion
The findings show that those in group A which had Virtual Exposer Therapy reported that after
the treatment the severity of their symptoms had gone down and the average went down to 5.61
stating that their symptoms were intense, sever, and did affect their daily activities but not
enough where they were confined to their home. Those that were in group B which were in the
CPT also noted that their symptoms also went down to a 7.32. Those in Group B reported that
their symptoms were severe and effected more of their daily activities than those on group A
reported. INFERENTIAL RESEARCH AND STATISTICS PROJECT
