This paper will cover all the steps to properly build a custom computer from scratch. After


following this guide, the readers should be able to install the windows operating system, set up


critical key features within the operating system, as well as knowing all the key components of a


desktop computer as well as their functions. On top of learning how to install the hardware and

has a set amount of hardware that are required in order for it to run properly. Power supply,


CPU, Hard Drive, Ram, and case are the main components required for a pc to run. Below are a

First thing to keep in mind when setting up a custom pc is the environment. This will ensure that nothing


wrong will happen that can possibly create a static discharge to any of the pc components. Be sure to


work in a room that does not have carpet flooring. Remember to properly ground yourself when working


with any pc hardware using the Anti-static mat along with the wrist straps. In addition make sure the


computer is on top of the static map when you are building the system. A simple static discharge can


easily damage any of the crucial components of a computer which can ruin the entire installation


process. Step One: Mount the Motherboard


Opening your case usually requires unscrewing a few thumb screws located on the back of your


case which will allow the side panel to be removed. Next step is to open up your motherboard


box and find I/O shield plate. It is a rectangular metal plate that protects the ports on the back


of the motherboard as well as sealing the case to optimize air flow. The I/O shield should snap


in place with ease. 6 HOW TO BUILD A CUSTOM PC I/O Shield


Once that is done, you can begin mounting the motherboard. Be sure to line up the ports on the


back with the I/O shield. You want to begin by screwing the standoff in the case first then you


can set the motherboard on top of the standoffs. Align the ports with the I/O Shield. .


Screw the screws into the standoff to ensure the motherboard stays in place. Step Two: Install the Processor 7 HOW TO BUILD A CUSTOM PC First you need to push down on the lever located to the side of processor slot. Then you can


insert your processor onto the motherboard. There should be an indicator located on the sides


of the processor slot for mounting the chip correctly. Once the chip has been inserted, fastened


the lever to secure processor in place. Step Three: Install CPU Fan Heatsink sits on top of CPU and the Fan is premounted on the heatsink.


The CPU fan/heatsink sits right on top of the processor. Assuming this is a brand new fan, it


comes with thermal paste already on the heatsink. Lock the four pins located on each corner of


the fan. Push down on each nodule and you will hear a clicking noise which indicates that the


fan has been locked onto the motherboard. Next step is to plug in the power connector which is


located right above of the right corner of the CPU fan.


Step four: Installing RAM Ram not installed Ram Installed 8 HOW TO BUILD A CUSTOM PC This particular motherboard supports a tripple channel which requires at least three memory modules


for the system to run. Look for the white notch, you should be able to unlock it by pressing down on it.


This will allow you to insert the ram into the slots. Stick you Ram in slot and apply some pressure untill


you hear a click. That will notify you that the Ram has been locked in place and the white notch will snap


back in place. Step Four: Installing PCI/ Graphics Card Graphics Card not installed Graphics Card installed First you need to remove the plate with a screwdriver located directly to the left of the PCI slot. Once


that has been completed u can insert you graphics card by applying a little bit of pressure until it you


hear a click. Once that has been done you will then need to put a screw in the plate to secure the


Graphics card in place. Step Five: Installing Hard Drive and DVD Drive


Most hard drives and DvD drives will slide in the slot and automatically lock in place. Some you will need


to insert screws on the sides to secure the devices. Modern Drives uses a 15 pin power connector and a

allows proper airflow which will prevent your system from overheating and potentially


damaging system components. Mount the Power supply then you can begin to connect all the


hardware. 10 HOW TO BUILD A CUSTOM PC Step Seven: Connecting all the cables


Connect all the devices to the power supply CPU Power CPU Power Connector Connector installed Connect the eight pin connector to the CPU Power slot shown above.


Next: Connect power to the Graphics card. The graphics card uses a six pin connector and sometimes it


requires more. Now connect the wires for the Hard Drive and Dvd Drive


The power connect for those two devices will come from the power supply while the other will be


connected directly onto the motherboard. 11 HOW TO BUILD A CUSTOM PC


Finally its time to connect the motherboard power connector. The motherboard uses a 20+4 pin


connector. The connector is located right next to the RAM slots. 20+4 pin Connector Motherboard slot Connected slot Step Eight: Connect Front Panel to motherboard.


Use the chart as a guide to properly plug in the wires . Use the chart above to correspond with the correct slots at located at the bottom right of the

At this point everything has been connected within the computer and the time has come to


close the case. Slide the case back on and screw the thumb screws to lock it. Rotate the PC to


get a full view of the back, Connect the keyboard, mouse, display cable, as well as the cable for


the power supply. The Mouse and Keyboard uses a USB Connection and depending on your


monitor you will have to use a display connector based on your set-up. In this case we will be

port on the pc should be located where the graphics card was installed. Connect one end of the

Power on the PC and within the first couple of seconds press the DEL key to enter into BIOS. In


the BIOS, you can check to see if all the hardware components that were previously installed are


being registered in the system. The Bios will display your processor speed, amount of memory,


and all other devices connected. In the BIOS, you can navigate around using the arrow keys. Not


all systems require you to edit the settings before installing the Operating system, but it is still


good to check to ensure all the settings are in place.


1. You want to look for storage configuration and make sure it is set on AHCI mode unless


you are planning to run windows XP which will require you to set it to IDE mode. 2. Go back to the main menu using the ESC key and look for ADVANCE BOOT OPTIONS or


simply BOOT OPTIONS. In this tab we are making sure that the boot priority is set to the


DVD drive so when we insert our Operating system disk, it will boot right off the drive. HOW TO BUILD A CUSTOM PC 14 3. After setting the boot priority, save changes and reboot the pc. As soon as the pc boots,


eject the disk drive and insert the operating CD. Since the boot priority has been set to


the DVD drive the DVD should load up on its own.


4. You will be at the windows 7 install menu. The picture shown below should be the first


menu that will pop up during the install. These options listed will allow the user to set


the language, time, as well as the keyboard input settings. Click next after those settings


have been set accordingly to the user 5. You will be prompted with the user agreement. This page is straight forward, check the


box on the bottom left and click next to continue with the install. 6. Next you will be given the option to ?Install now? shown below. Click Install now and you will


have two options shown below. The upgrade option allows the user to upgrade their existing


operation system to a newer verison of windows. The custom install will allow the user to install

drive you desire to install windows and select next. 8. At this point of the install, sit back and wait for install to complete. This will take several


minutes for all the files to be installed onto the Hard Drive. 9. Once the windows has installed all the files, you can begin customizing your settings. On

unauthorized will not be permitted access to the computer.

Setting up Network: There are two ways to connect to the internet: Ethernet cable connection or


wireless connection. In order for you to connect through wireless, you need to have a wireless


adapter already and the installation driver CD. If you do not then you must connect using the


Ethernet cable and download the appropriate driver from the manufacture?s website. Once that


has been completed you can begin with windows update and install any other necessary drivers


for you PC.


The graphics card driver usually need an update right


out of the box. Without a proper graphics card driver,


you screen will not be optimized and hence the user


experience will be ruined. In order for you to update


the drivers, open up ?device manager? by clicking the


start button then right clicking my computer then click


manage. A menu should pop up, look for device


manage on the left side of the screen. Look for the


sound, video and game controllers tab and right click


your graphics card then select update driver. Once


that has been completed your screen resolution


should be optimized. Activating windows and configuring security: 18 HOW TO BUILD A CUSTOM PC Every operating system needs an activation code in order for it to work. There is a probation


period granted to users and if the operating system has not been activated within the allotted


time then the system will be restricted. Windows can be activated through phone, fax, or

Configuring backups


Configuring regular backups will ensure that not data will be loss. Click the start button then


select control panel followed by systems and security and backup and restore as shown below. Once you click Backup and Restore, you will notice that a backup has not been set. Click set up


backup and select a designated storage drive to back up the files.


You can do either a recommended backup or a


custom backup

option and click next. On the next page you can


select any folders or an entire hard drive that you


want to back up. After that has been done save


settings and run backup. Finally, you can set a


specific schedule that you want the system to run
