Running Head: BUILDING A MULTI-PROJECT BATTALION BY LEADING UPWARD 1 Assignment 1: A Peaceful Evacuation: Building a Multi-Project Battalion by Leading Upward Gregory C. Hyde, Jr.

BUS518: Project Management Leadership

Professor Paul Richardson

July 23, 2016 Running Head: BUILDING A MULTI-PROJECT BATTALION BY LEADING UPWARD 2 1) Describe the leadership style that Lieutenant Colonel Yaron exhibited as the commander of a

battalion for the evacuation operation. Provide three (3) examples of his leadership actions and

behavior. Discuss the pros and cons in each example you describe to support the response.

Example one of Lieutenant Colonel Yaron is when a presentation he gave to senior

military officers did not yield the result that he thought it would. ?One of the officers did not

like what he heard, so he reacted by sending a lengthy email to a Brigadier General.?(Laufer) Lt.

Col. Yaron inadvertently alienated this officer. This happened because his peers had not been

made fully aware by their superiors the importance of the operation in advance. If Lt. Col. Yaron

been aware of his peers attitude in advance he would have made it more ?determined and

sensitive? as he put it. The pro to this is Yaron learned from the experience that he had to dive a

bit deeper before presenting his case.

Example two is his handling of the staff that was being sent from the supporting units.

He found that the units where not sending their best staff and instead was sending the least

motivated troops. ?Either because they were not convinced that the evacuation was a crucial

mission or simply because they did not want to detract from their ongoing operations by

spending energy on it.? (Laufer) He was disappointed in what he found so he devised a plan to

get the personnel he needed. First he instructed his team leaders to identify those least suitable

for the mission, second he asked all of the feeder units for highly qualified troops which was met

with resistance and lastly he went to his superior and advised him that ?Without the personal

involvement and commitment to the mission on the part of the commanders of the dispatching

units, we have no chance of succeeding.?(Laufer) The pro to this example is that they got better

leaders. The con is that it took more time to get the leadership formed. Running Head: BUILDING A MULTI-PROJECT BATTALION BY LEADING UPWARD 3 Example three is came after a meeting with a citizen, Arik Harpaz, where he learned that

the citizen would have a hard time leaving the house from where he had a shrine for his daughter

that was killed by terrorists two years earlier. Through this encounter he determined that he

?could have a successful operation with solders of average quality, but not with squad leader of

average quality?. (Laufer) This also brought him to increase the training of the squad leaders to

improve their communication and to read each situation as a unique problem. These examples

show that Lt Colonel Yaron has a Lateral Influencing leadership style, which can be described as

?emphasizing teamwork, team building and decision making.?

2) Analyze the leadership style that Lieutenant Colonel Daniel exhibited as he took center stage

to lead this complex military operation. Provide three (3) examples of his leadership actions and

behavior, assessing the pros and cons in each example you describe to support the response.

Example one of Lieutenant Colonel Daniel was a convening of the top military and police

psychologists ?with the objective of expressing and listening to their different opinions about the

potential problems expected in the evacuation project.? (Laufer) The pro is that he got a lot of

different options to choose from. The con is he had to make sure he had the right mix of experts.

If he only had one side then the options would have been limited to what he wanted.

Example two is came after the meeting where he effectively coined the term ?with

determination and sensitivity.? Coining of this term gave the mission a clear and concise

message. A pro to this is having a message that everyone could use to keep the mission focused.

Example three was establishing a ?team of leading psychologists who would help the

commanding officers of the various units to combine the operational aspects of the

disengagement project with its ?softer? aspects.? (Laufer) With his efforts he understood that this

was a military operation and it would be unlike anything that the soldiers and police had ever Running Head: BUILDING A MULTI-PROJECT BATTALION BY LEADING UPWARD 4 encountered and therefore had to be handled differently than an enemy engagement. By

understanding that this is a different type of mission he was able to show everyone why and how

to make it a peaceful evacuation instead of a Military removal. These examples show that Lt

Colonel Daniel has a bottom-up consultative approach, which is he ?obtains others? opinions and

acts as the servant for the team.

3) Compare and contrast the leadership styles of Lieutenant Colonel Yaron and Lieutenant

Colonel Daniel. Provide three (3) examples of the similarities and differences between these

project leaders, and discuss how each leader might address contemporary leadership issues and

challenges in Israel today.

Their styles have one similarity, they both emphasize teamwork. Lieutenant Colonel

Yaron tried to enhance teamwork by presenting the vision of the mission to his peers. Where

Lieutenant Colonel Daniel fostered teamwork by gathering his peers for a think tank.

Both leader knew that they had to have the best personnel to make the mission as success.

Lt. Col. Daniel had this feeling from the onset of the mission and Yaron came to this after the

meeting with Arik.

They differ in that Yaron wanted to inform and empower his peers to make informed

decisions on their own once they have engaged with their units. But Daniel wanted to empower

himself and to develop a plan from the psychologists? viewpoint. I feel that both leaders would

follow a similar path now in Israel as they did in this case. Although I think they would put more

thought into how terrorist could influence the move, as the terror threat is greater now than at the

time of this case, both from inside Israel and outside. Running Head: BUILDING A MULTI-PROJECT BATTALION BY LEADING UPWARD 5 4) Discuss Lieutenant Colonel Yaron and Lieutenant Colonel Daniel interrelationship using Jung

theory and the four (4) personality traits. Provide three (3) examples of how Lieutenant Colonel

Yaron and Lieutenant Colonel Daniel personality and leadership style might enhance or hinder

team performance for the complex military operation in this case study.

According to Jung?s theory Lt.Col Yaron is Introverted. When the mission came up Lt

Col Yaron jumped at the opportunity even though he had no knowledge of how to achieve the

mission. Yaron ?perceived it as a personal challenge.? (Laufer) When the task of build the

battalion came up Yaron used his on intuition to decide on the makeup of the unit. When Yaron

encountered one on the evacuees and was struck by the comments the evacuee had made about

the mission, he made an on the spot assessment that only squad leaders would knock on doors.

Then according to Jung?s theory Lt Col Daniel is Extraverted. Lt. Col Daniel relies on

information he gathers from his peer group for his decision making. Every decision he made

came out of a peer group meetings. Daniel used a meeting to decide what the psychological

makeup of the staff should be. If Daniel would have meet Arik, he would not have made an on

the spot decision that only squad leaders are the first to every house. He would have gather more

data from a peer group before making a decision. Running Head: BUILDING A MULTI-PROJECT BATTALION BY LEADING UPWARD 6 References
